Counting Money Games is a free online counting money game for kids ages 5–12 (grades K–4). Instead of worksheets, kids learn by playing shopkeeper — counting coins on the counter, ringing up sales as the cashier, and giving change from real bills. Every wrong answer becomes a gentle teaching moment, never a failure. No ads, no accounts, no sign-up.

Three ways to play

• Count It! — coins and bills laid on the shop counter. How much money is it? Builds coin recognition and skip counting by 5s, 10s, and 25s.
• Cashier — a customer wants an item with a price tag. Tap coins from the till to make the exact amount — any combination that adds up wins. Advanced levels flip it: the customer pays with a bill and you give the change.
• Which Is Worth More? — two piles side by side. Five pennies or one dime? More coins doesn't mean more money — the core lesson of all money math in one tap.

What kids learn, level by level

Six levels scaffold the same progression taught in elementary school math, from first coins to real cashier skills:

• Penny Lane — pennies and nickels up to 25¢
• Dime Time — dimes join in, up to 50¢ (and why the smallest coin isn't the smallest value!)
• Quarter Master — quarters, up to $1.00
• The Mixed Till — all coins mixed, up to $2.00
• Paper Money — $1 and $5 bills, up to $10, with simple change-making
• Head Cashier — making and counting back change from $5, $10, and $20

Coins are drawn at their true relative sizes — the dime really is smaller than the penny — and a built-in practice engine notices which money skills a child finds hard and brings them back more often.

Counting back change, step by step

The game teaches counting back change — the classic cashier technique of counting up from the price to the amount paid. An item costs 87¢ and the customer pays a dollar? Count up: 88, 89, 90 with pennies, then a dime makes $1.00. It's the way real cashiers made change for a century, it builds genuine number sense, and this is one of the only places online to practice it interactively.

For teachers

Counting Money Games works on classroom Chromebooks, iPads, and phones with nothing to install and no student accounts.
